How I Came Up With The Idea to Write My Johnny Depp Song

Article by Erin B.

Like a songwriter, it’s rarely been my purpose to go over or talk about what my songs mean or even the motivations behind writing them. This is because I have always felt it’s better to leave interpretation up to the audience so that they can derive from the song what they want and also to figure out what this means to them.Recently although, I have had a lot of people wanting to know about how exactly I came up with the Johnny Depp Song from my 2nd record, Trip To Horizon.I am unsure why this song has become more attention than every other song around the record; apart from it will mention the famous actor and his movies by title.

I believed I’d start with talking about a bit of how a song-writing process works well for me, Instead of in other words about how precisely the Johnny Depp Song came about. Each songwriter has a different take on how to produce, however at the end of the day, it’s the journey the artist goes through that actually matters. Even a single word or title idea may spark the beginning of a song, Occasionally a song might develop through a lyric idea or an isolated factor that you simply see or listen to.Who knows, maybe Paul McCartney heard someone say “Hey, Jude!” and instantly considered a sound lesson title. In general, other writers find a specific chord progression or a simple riff which sets them off.Keith Richards for instance, awoke one evening using the primary guitar a part of “Satisfaction” in the mind and that he was off and running to create this classic Rolling Stones song.

For me personally, songwriting is about informing stories that when the listener hears it, the song indicates something to them. And it always begins with attempting to tell a tale which means something in my experience.I used to be watching an interview with director Wes Craven, who while discussing his movie A Nightmare on Elm Street, In the situation of the Johnny Depp Song, said it wasn’t till after Johnny Depp auditioned that his daughter saw the actor’s head shot and thought he was perfect for the role.As an artist who has spent a lot of time in Hollywood as a musician and actress (and dealing with LOTS of rejection), I found it very funny that it was the picture that was so important.

I’m very influenced by writers like Warren Zevon and Joan Didion who can look at a topic and always find a distinctive, funny way of bringing it to light. So, getting stayed inside the trenches of Hollywood, (and hopefully pointing my best Zevon and Didion), the Johnny Depp Song came to exist just like a tongue in mouth area perspective overall ‘Hollywood thing’.Hopefully this article helps clarify some of the questions I have been receiving about the process I went through when writing my Johnny Depp song.
